The Fonz's Movie Review: The Batman 2022

Hey guys! It’s certainly been awhile. Hope y’all are doing ok. As many of you know, the much anticipated action-thriller film The Batman (2022) has hit theatres worldwide and it’s been a huge success! Fans and critics alike have praised the film for its new take on the iconic comic book character, and I myself have thoroughly enjoyed the film. Needless to say, in this official Fonzie post, I will be giving my in-depth, spoiler-free review of Matt Reeve’s The Batman.

To start, we first need to talk about Robert Pattinson. When it was first announced that he will be playing Batman, many were sceptical of the casting choice, saying he was unfit for the role of Batman, that to properly play the character of Bruce Wayne you need to look gritty and tough. Well, Pattinson proved all the haters wrong, as his portrayal of Batman has been critically acclaimed to be the best on-screen Batman to date. This is the first Batman movie, let alone comic book movie, where I was genuinely terrified of the superhero in the movie. Pattinson’s very presence alone commands the room he’s in, and his minimal dialogue helped to enhance the dominance he asserts onto people. Robert Pattinson put his all into this role, and it shows. From the subtle movement to his line deliveries, everything adds up to an excellent performance, and kudos to him for proving the entire Internet wrong.

Another great thing about this film is Gotham City itself. Time and time again, different iterations of the Batman universe have depicted Gotham City to be this vile, savage place, filled with criminals and the unruly. Most adaptations fail to properly capture this, but this movie perfectly encapsulates what it's like to live in Gotham. To put it neatly, Gotham City is the most corrupt, vile place imaginable. From thugs on the streets to corrupt city officials, it is truly a despicable place. Even Batman himself questions whether he is truly making an effect in Gotham. It really makes you feel for Batman, as it is an uphill battle from the beginning, but that also helps you root for him. The absolute carnage and lawlessness of Gotham also gave birth to dangerous criminals, and that brings me to my next point, The Riddler.

I always found The Riddler to be out of place in today’s times. Gone are the days of goofy characters in our entertainment mediums, now audiences value real, personal characters of which we can relate to. The Riddler in most adaptations is the furthest from relatable. I’m sorry but a silly man in green suits who likes to make riddles with dangerous consequences just sounds too 1950’s to me.

However, what Matt Reeves did with this character is absolutely astonishing. The Riddler in this movie sent chills down my spine. He even gave me a new phobia. On-screen serial killers have never terrified me until I saw this movie’s The Riddler. Paul Dano puts in so much effort and power in every line, with exaggerated body movements that match the comic book character to his terrifying voice and actions. If you watched the movie, that one scene with the riddles? Yea, I was sweating. I have no idea how this movie managed to make me scared of riddles, but I’ll never see The Riddler the same ever again.

Lastly, you can’t talk about this movie without mentioning its soundtrack. The soundtrack, although overplayed, is breathtaking and helps to add in that “oomph” effect of the movie. That iconic song by Nirvana played in this movie strangely fits Bruce Wayne in more ways than one, and the amount of memes sprung up on Tiktok about it is just too good. Pair this up with the cinematography and excellent side characters, and you got yourself a hell of a cinematic experience. I can’t recommend this movie enough, go get a ticket now and see what I’m talking about for yourself! It’s about time we have a detox from Marvel’s quirky relentless jokes and have a serious, grim movie that reminds us why superheroes are needed in this world.

The Batman is a 8.5/10, highly recommended. That’s all from me Fonzies, byee~!
