To Achieve Sustainable Management of Clean Water and Sanitation: For You, For Us, and For the World

Great day, Fonzies! Today, we are going to look over SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Before initiating the conversation, let us start with something relaxing.

Well, both memes tell exactly what you feel, right? Nevertheless, both memes above highlight the theme of this post ----- “water.” “Water” is one of the main life necessities. You and I can easily access freshwater supplies every day for drinking, cooking, handwashing, bath, and cleaning. Access to water seems no longer to be an arduous thing, where we just need to twist the faucet or tap and that is it! You get the water. But what if you can’t always access clean water anymore? Would you start appreciating the water you get now?

In today’s conversation, we talk about SDG Goal 6. For the time being, what are the facts that you should be aware of from the goal?

In the globe,

  • 2.2 billion people encounter a lack of safe drinking water resources.

  • 4.2 billion people live without access to adequate sanitation.

* What does this mean? *

The moment you are craving juices or any beverages, other sides of the world are seeking simple clean water supplies to resolve their thirstiness. Imagine they must take a 30-minute to one-hour walk from their home every day to get a clean drinking water source. You know how blessed you are. The hour when you are taking a long shower to release your one-day tiredness, communities on other sides of the world are collecting dirty water to clean themselves. During the outbreak of the pandemic, we are told to sanitize our hands more often to ensure hygiene and prevent bacteria. Nonetheless, underprivileged communities are suffering from illnesses and diseases because of poor hygiene and the inferior quality of the water they consume. Some of them do not even have proper and sanitized toilets but they share their toilet within households.

* What can you do to contribute to the availability and sustainable management of clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, especially in marginalized communities? *

  • Reducing food waste as water is needed when producing food.

  • Practice adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle could save up to one-third of your water footprint.

  • Do not overuse water. Try taking short showers and make sure to close the tape tightly after using it.

  • Volunteer in the beach, river, and ocean cleaning-up programs to prevent water pollution.

  • Creating awareness of hygiene among children and donating sanitizing products to the needy community.

* What are the predictions for future water sources if actions are not taken promptly? *

71% of the Earth’s surface is water-covered. However, how much water is accessible to us? Would the water be depleted in one day? Water insecurity or water shortage could induce during the next 20 years due to growing water consumption and demand from agriculture industries and a rise in population. In 2030, the United Nations estimates that 1.6 billion people will be facing the risk of drinking water insecurity, and 2.8 billion people will encounter a lack of safely managed sanitation. Hence, Fonzies, the basic water supplies you get each day are the appetence of some marginalized communities.

Let me share with you a quote that I strongly agree with:

“No water, no life. No Blue, no green”
