Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty

Updated: Apr 15, 2023

Hello, Fonzies! Welcome to our Fonz website’s new series! I am sure that you have heard countless times of “Sustainable Development Goals” since being a part of the Sunwayians. In Sunway Foundation Programme, you need to get familiar with the 17 SDGs as our syllabus will be using the SDGs as a part of teaching and learning.

This week, I will be leading you to take a glance into the first Sustainable Development Goal which is “No Poverty”. Before diving into a more detailed explanation, let us enjoy reading the poem below. It is the inner monologue of an individual living in poverty.

Filthy mattresses and smelly clothes,

Washing by hands but there’s no soap,

Muddy slippers walk along the road,

Seeking shelter from rain and drops.

School is something strange to me,

A student uniform is what I need,

I have my dream as my friend did,

Wishing to learn more than just A to Z.

Worn out with tears,

And bathe in sweat,

Others see me with no good traits,

Luck and prosperity shouldn’t be what I say,

The meal next is what I genuinely care.

Craving noodles and scrambled eggs,

But all I have is just mouldy bread,

Pizza and fried chicken I have never tasted,

Expired canned food has already made my day.

After going through the poem, what are your thoughts and feelings?

The population and community being targeted in the first SDG are the most vulnerable as well as genuinely need society’s assistance and attention. The main problems encountered by the poor community consist of unemployment, rising inflation, the outbreak of diseases and pandemics, as well as impacts of wars happening recently. The combination of these factors has brought in around 75 million – 95 million people living in extreme poverty in 2022.

What about the effects?

The communities who live in poverty are facing the hardship of food insecurity and getting secure shelter. This causes poor communities to suffer from malnutrition and illnesses due to the inaccessibility to clean water and regular meals. The elderly and kids are also not accessible to healthcare and medical treatment because of the high-expensive fees. Moreover, children could not go to school or pursue a higher education level because of financial burden.

Thus, what can we do to contribute our efforts to this SDG? Well, your little contribution can make an enormous difference! You can look for a trustworthy organisation or charity to donate food supplies, clothes, books, furniture, or anything that you think the marginalised community will need it. It is not everything about money. In addition, you are encouraged to volunteer in campaigns to help with emergency aid and donate your kindness to the needy community. Bear in mind that a little bit of contribution is still valuable to the underprivileged community. You are doing great in bringing “SDG 1: No Poverty” one step close to success!

That is all from me, Fonzies. I hope that you have been enlightened by today’s sharing. Remember that the globe needs your help! Stay tuned for the next upcoming SDG post. Bye!
