MBTI - What is it, and How Does it Help?

Hi Fonzies, how are y'all doing? :)

Recently, especially our students from newer intakes who are in the process of getting to know your fellow peers, most of you guys have definitely either heard or asked this question of - “What’s your MBTI?”

Some of you may be aware of what this is (pssst if you’re like me who redoes the test every half a year to ‘check up’ on my latest MBTI status, kudos to that dedication) , and some of you may not know what this is. No worries, though! Today, I’ll be sharing with you a bit of background info on this upcoming trend, and what purposes it serves.

First off, MBTI stands for Myers Briggs Type Indicator, which is based on a personality theory developed by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs. The questionnaire for the personality test provides statements, to which you’ll have to respond from a scale of strongly agree to strongly disagree. You’re then evaluated based on your answers given, which determines your positions on these four spectrums - Extraversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling and Judging vs. Perceiving. In the end, you’ll get a four-letter code out of the sixteen combinations available, which corresponds to a personality type, such as ENTP is to The Visionary.

Unlike other self-discovery tools like horoscopes or Hogwarts houses though, the results of the MBTI test are not permanent. Your MBTI may change if you redo the test in a different mindset, and that’s completely normal! Personally though, mine has consistently been an INFP no matter how much I try to answer differently, so - hA don’t try to cheat the system. JKJK :P

How does it help though, you may ask?

Well, identifying your own MBTI type is a method of self-discovery, and hopefully a great way to help you realize your potential, once you understand yourself better. If you’re currently in a rather lost and unsure state, you can use your results to identify suitable careers, and maybe even discover your passion.

Besides, as a popular personality test, asking for one’s MBTI is definitely a great icebreaker, especially when you are making new friends and are seeking to understand each other more! It could serve as a nice guideline to compatibility as well, in all sectors including friendships and relationships. However, I would definitely advise to not use this rigidly and limit yourself to only people of certain MBTIs (no MBTI discrimination here ahem) , as this does not fully represent anyone’s personality.

With that said, here’s the end to our little MBTI talk! For those of you who don’t know yours yet, click here

to do the test and find out your MBTI!

Hope your results gave you a little enlightenment, or at the very least, an interesting topic of discussion with your friends! :))
