Hi Fonzies! If you’ve been active on any social media platform like Tiktok, Instagram or even Twitter, I’m sure that you’ve heard of one of the most popular songs right now, the Die For You remix. As it’s featuring two some of the most popular and mainstream artists in the industry right now (The Weeknd and Ariana Grande), it’s no wonder that the song managed to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart in just a few days despite the original song, “Die for you” being more than a decade ago. Nearly everyone has been playing this song, some for its infectious beat, some for its heart-tugging lyrics, and some just because it’s good old mainstream music. Both singers systematically teased the release of the song up until its release date and the reaction of fans had come in various forms. Some absolutely love it while some think it’s just a simple excuse for a cash grab. Now, is possibly one of the most famous songs of the year “good” or just overhyped?
If we take a look at the lyrics, the song is mainly about all the ups and downs (more specifically the harder times) of being in a relationship. There is a portion of fans who believe that this song was written about Bella Hadid, seeing that she dated The Weeknd at a point. However, the way the song was written makes it relatable to different people living completely different lives, as it very generally discusses how two people that love each other can’t be together due to certain circumstances. The way he puts indescribable feelings into words is one of the main reasons why his music is so popular: it speaks to people. Throughout the song, there are some notable moments where he chooses to state the painful truth that some people unfortunately live by, and that is the fact that although they’re not “together” with said person, they would still do anything just to see them happy. It becomes even more depressing when the song talks about how difficult it is to leave the person who you once thought was perfect for you and that you might never find someone who was as good of a match. This resonates with many people in this day and age as not many are good at communicating their feelings, and as such, they turn to music to help them express what they’re going through.
The lyrics goes on to express how hard it is to realize that sometimes just love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship and it’s even harder when you try to find a reason that caused the relationship to fall apart, and you just can’t seem to find one because, in your own mind, they’re still a person you thought you’d be with forever. Furthermore, from the lyrics sung by Ariana, it becomes clear that this feeling of confusion mixed with sadness and longing is not one-sided. The other person also has a hard time concentrating on what they’re supposed to do in their lives and it’s so hard to do so because they’re still hung up on that one individual.
Another take is that both of their voices are so uniquely different, one leaning slightly more towards the dark end of the spectrum, while another is on the other end. It’s pretty interesting to denote how this might also tie in with the overall meaning of the song, since the song also touches on certain differences people can have, thus reflecting it in the stark difference in the tones of their voices.
The meaning of the lyrics, coupled with an addictive tune is bound to make this song soar high on the charts. Personally, as a casual listener of both singers, I find myself listening to this on repeat just for the addictive chorus. It truly deserves most, if not all the hype and attention. If you’re one of those people who think all popular music is unimpressive, you might want to give this one a listen: there’s a huge chance you might change your mind.
